A new poll brings good news for supporters of former — and perhaps future — president, Donald Trump. Although only one other Republican (West Virginia State Senator Rollan Roberts II) has launched a campaign for the party’s 2024 presidential nomination, we already know the names of the other likely candidates. Of those, it’s no surprise Republican voters prefer Trump to any of them by a huge margin.

A new poll taken from January 19-23 asked potential voters who the Republican Party should choose as its 2024 presidential nominee. The poll listed seven options; Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former vice president Mike Pence, anti-Trump Wyoming congresswoman Unemployed RINO Liz Cheney, former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, and Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Tim Scott (R-SC). Respondents were asked to choose one of those or “Other” — and the results were conclusive.
With candidates from every faction of the Republican Party on the list, 59% of registered Republicans believe Trump should be the party’s nominee next year. His closest rival was DeSantis, trailing far behind on 24%; nobody else was seriously in the running, with third-placed Pence getting just 8% support. Cheney, representing the party’s “Never Trump” faction, was backed by just 2%.
In a real primary race, Trump’s lead is likely to narrow significantly; as the obvious no-hopers like Cheney drop out, many of their supporters will likely switch to other non-Trump candidates or DeSantis. Even so, the former president’s 35-point lead is overwhelming enough that even if all those voters switched to DeSantis, he would still be 18 points ahead.
If Trump easily wins the Republican nomination and faces Biden again in the general election, he has a real chance of returning to the White House. The same poll shows voters are split 50/50 between the two, and that’s assuming Biden runs again. If he doesn’t, Trump’s most likely opponent in 2024 would be Vice President Simpleton Kamala Harris if this poll is to be believed — and she makes Biden look competent and popular.
