Nidhi Eoseewong’s death cause explored
Nidhi Eoseewong, an eminent historian, prolific author, and perceptive political analyst, passed away on Monday at the age of 83. According to his family, he passed away from lung cancer at 11:47 AM. On Thursday, his remains will be donated to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital after a traditional food alms collection at Wat U-mong in Chiang Mai in commemoration of his memory. The Move Forward Party’s Secretary-General, Chaithawat Tulathon, paid tribute to Nidhi by posting an obituary on his Facebook page. The academic community in Thailand is in deep sadness as Prof. Dr. Nidhi Eoseewong, a renowned thinker and poet, bids farewell. On August 7, 2023, at the age of 83, he was laid to rest in his hometown after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Nidhi’s family kindly bequeathed his remains to Chiang Mai University’s Faculty of Medicine for scholarly investigation in accordance with his wishes for an unadorned trip into eternity. On August 10, a sincere gathering of close friends and coworkers gathered at Wat U-Mong in Chiang Mai to pay tribute in a moving ceremony. Dr Nidhi was a Thai-Chinese with Lao ancestry who was born in Chiang Mai on May 23, 1940. He artistically personified the union of his Chinese heritage with Lao culture by lovingly referring to himself as “Jek Pon Lao,” where “Jek” implies a descendant of Chinese heritage.
After beginning his academic journey at Assumption College Sriracha in the province of Chonburi, he went on to Chulalongkorn University to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history. He finished his voyage in 1976 after pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. He then went back to Chiang Mai University and taught history there until 2000, when he retired. He left the official academic world, but his involvement in the intellectual world persisted. In addition to his academic endeavors, Nidhi’s voice was heard in the Matichon newspaper, where he thoughtfully and skillfully expressed his thoughts and opinions.
