DYLAN MULVANEY’S OLAY AD PROMPTS YET ANOTHER BOYCOTT ONLINE

Dylan Mulvaney has found herself at the center of another boycott controversy, simply for appearing in an advert for skincare company Olay.

It’s been a whirlwind few weeks for TikTok star and actress Dylan Mulvaney.

Ever since she inadvertently sparked a Bud Light boycott after uploading a sponsored video for the beer brand, Mulvaney has found herself coming under intense scrutiny from anti-trans campaigners on a daily basis online.

And the influencer is continuing to stoke anger online for her brand collaborations, including for a recent advert with skin brand Olay, though the exact reason for the anger being directed at her is hard to determine.

WHO IS DYLAN MULVANEY AND WHY WAS SHE IN AN OLAY ADVERT?

Mulvaney is an actress turned social media star who, due to her transgender identity, has become something of a key figure in the ongoing culture war surrounding trans rights online.

Mulvaney has summoned a huge following on TikTok over the last year as she has documented her journey as someone who is transitioning and, as a result, now works with various brands to promote their products.

As well as telling stories and vlogging about her life, Mulvaney often shares beauty tricks and tips, so it’s not unusual for her to do sponsored content for a company like Olay.

The video that has sparked the latest controversy appears rather harmless. In it, Mulvaney can be seen miming and getting ready for the day, while using an Olay SPF moisturizer, in a clip that has now been liked over 1850,000 times.

TWITTER USERS SAY THEY WILL NOW BOYCOTT OLAY

Despite the fact the video came out in early March, the recent attention that has been placed on Mulvaney has seen her outspoken critics go back through her archive to find more sponsored videos after the Bud Light incident.

And the gist of the anger about the advert stems from the fact that some people claim that Mulvaney should not be promoting products that are marketed towards women because of the fact that she is trans.

One of Mulvaney’s most outspoken critics is Oli London, a British influencer who had surgery to look like a K-pop star, who claimed that Mulaveny “parodies women”, in one of the multiple tweets he has posted about the advert.

In reaction to the advert, a number of people have now tweeted updated lists of brands that they will be boycotting, including Olay, for working with Mulvaney:

MULVANEY RARELY ADDRESSES THE CONTROVERSY

While she may have suddenly become of the internet’s most trending topics in a matter of weeks, Mulvaney appears to refuse to engage in the drama.

Instead, Mulvaney has continued to post her usual content to her social media channels, while the world argues around her about her existence and the brands she chooses to work for.

Even the likes of Donald Trump Jr have weighed in on the Mulvaney controversies of late, with the former president’s son labeling trans activists “lunatics” on Twitter.

At the time of writing, Mulvaney is yet to formally address the Olay backlash and judging by her lack of response to the Bud Light boycott, there is likely a good chance things will stay that way.
