Anheuser-Busch is a global brewing giant that produces more than 100 popular beer brands. Anheuser-Bush is part of the massive AB InBev group, which owns breweries throughout the world.

From Bud Light to Natural Ice, or Stella Artois to St Pauli Girl, chances are the beer you enjoy is an Anheuser-Busch product.

Anheuser-Busch History

Anheuser-Busch is the leader in the US beer market and one of the largest brewers in the world.

The company had its origins in a small brewery opened in St. Louis back in 1852, which was bought by the soap manufacturer Eberhard Anheuser in 1860 when it hit rough times.

Adolphus Busch, a brewery supplier who became the driving force behind the brewery’s future success married into the family through his wedding to Anheuser’s daughter.

He expanded the company through innovation and became president in 1880 after Anheuser’s death.

In the 20th century, Anheuser-Busch Companies had become the world’s largest brewer, but was surpassed in volume in 2004 by InBev, a corporation formed by the merger of AmBev and Interbrew.

In July 2008 Anheuser-Busch was purchased by InBev for approximately $52 billion formed Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest brewer. In 2016 the company acquired SABMiller, a beverage company based in London, for more than $100 billion.

Other Breweries Owned By Anheuser-Busch

Over the years Anheuser-Busch has acquired a wide range of breweries in the US and abroad as the beer industry has undergone steady consolidation. Now that it has been bought by AB InBev, the range of breweries in the group includes:

  • Grupo Modelo in Mexico (the brewer of Corona and the Modelo range of beers)
  • South Korea’s Oriental Brewery (the brewer of Cass)
  • SAB Miller
  • Brahma (Brazil)
  • Harbin (China)
  • Quilmes (Argentina)

Other breweries it has acquired either outright or as part of related acquisitions worldwide include Australia’s Fosters Group, Beck’s Brewing, Labatts and Lakeport Brewing in Canada and the main brewery in the Dominican Republic.

More recently, AB InBev and the Anheuser-Busch group have been acquiring craft beer brands in the US and abroad.

Anheuser-Busch plus foreign breweries give AB InBev Diversification

Having brewing brands in Europe, along with China, Mexico and Brazil, gives AB InBev valuable diversification.

The US beer market is generally said to be in contraction – especially with mass market beers – so having exposure to fast growing emerging markets helps offset that.

Anheuser Busch’s acquisition of US based craft beers gives it a stake one segment of the industry that is growing stateside.

Like many brewers, Anheuser-Busch has expanded into related drinks such as seltzers, malt liquors and infusions (as well as speciality beers such as Bud Light lime) to maintain overall sales and revenue.

Beers with a lower alcohol content, and light beers, have been among the best performers among Anheuser Busch brands in recent years.

Anheuser Busch Partnerships

AB InBev is the official beer sponsor of FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ and FIFA World Cup 2026.

One way or another, through its various brands including Budweiser, the brewer has had a 40 year partnership with FIFA, the operator of soccer’s world cup.

Bud Light Controversy

Anheuser Busch’s beer brands have sometimes courted controversy. The most recent example was Bud Light’s partnership.

Bud Light (for many years the undisputed leader in sales) lost its position, according to stats released in June 2023, as the best-selling beer in the US after a boycott spawned by the brand’s partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

Sales in the four weeks to June fell almost a quarter as controversy raged over the the tie up, in which Mulvaney showed off a personalized can of the beer on her Instagram channel.

That meantModelo Especial (another Anheuser Busch brand) took top spot, with 8.4% of US beer sales by value in the period.

Conservative pundits, politicians and celebrities – including Kid Rock, NFL player Trae Waynes and model Bri Teresi – have attacked the partnership and shared videos of themselves shooting Bud Light cans.

Their opposition to Bud’s flirtation with identity politics resonated with middle America triggering a slide in the price of shares of Bud Light’s parent company Anheuser-Busch InBev and the firm has put two executives on leave.

According to the BBC, the chief executive of AB InBev’s North American business, Brendan Whitworth, said in a statement on 14 April: “We never intended to be part of a discussion that divides people. We are in the business of bringing people together over a beer.”

The broadcaster said new Bud Light adverts were also aired, which featured iconic American imagery including the US flag and horses galloping across open country.

The chief executive Anheuser-Busch InBev, Michel Doukeris, said on a call with investors on 4 May: “We need to clarify the facts that this was one can, one influencer, one post and not a campaign.”

“We are providing direct financial support to the frontline teams that work for us and our wholesalers as to Bud Light have significantly increased our investments behind the brand in the US,” he added.
