After a seemingly powerful State of the Union address, Democrats as a whole appear to be more confident with 80-year-old Joe Biden making another run for the White House. If he does, he will be the oldest candidate ever to do so in American history. Still, a vast majority of Democratic voters – over 70% – say they would prefer to see someone else as their nominee, and a name that has come up in several circles has been Michelle Obama!
The idea is not as far-fetched as you might think. Vice President Harris is even more unpopular among Democrats than her boss, and the party doesn’t really have a deep bench of candidates. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s miserable performance shows he’s incapable of running the country. Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) would be 83 years old on his Inauguration Day. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) likely lacks the charisma to gain national support.
But like it or not, there’s another candidate who just might save the day for the Dems. As abhorrent as the thought may be too many, former first lady Michelle Obama’s name is increasingly being bandied about as a potential nominee.
The concept of a Michelle Obama candidacy isn’t new. She’s been asked about her political aspirations for years but has thus far denied that she’d like to return to the White House. Asked back in November ‘22 about a possible run, for example, Mrs. Obama replied with an emphatic “no,” adding that she detests being asked that question.
Many future candidates say they’re not running until, suddenly, they are.
Obama has increased her public presence in recent months and even written a book — steps most politicians take ahead of a run for the presidency. Even some of her recent comments suggest she’s trying to tap into a key voter base Biden struggled to win over during the 2020 election — suburban women. And, notably, Obama refused to endorse Biden for reelection when given the chance last November.
“You know, I, I — I will have to see,” she said when asked if she wants Biden to run again.
A Michelle Obama candidacy could pose a real challenge for Republicans, especially if former President Donald Trump were the GOP nominee. Last March, former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Public Affairs in the Trump administration Monica Crowley warned, “If [Democrats] were to run Michelle Obama, that would put us in a very difficult position.” She described Obama as “completely plausible, very popular, and immune to criticism.”
If you think the idea of a President Michelle Obama is laughable, or an impossibility, don’t forget that the Democrats managed to pull a doddering, a senile old man over the finish line in 2020 with the help of Big Tech and the legacy media. And they somehow convinced enough Pennsylvanians to put a stroke victim who struggles with basic communication in the Senate.
How much easier would it be for them to send the Obamas back to the White House?
